Under revised accreditation standards, journalism and mass communication programs are required to regularly assess student learning and to use the results to improve curriculum and instruction. The study revealed that the program utilizes internships as an indirect measure among its multiple measurement tools for assessment and that data collected from internship experiences contributed to steps taken to improve curriculum and instruction. Key challenges, however, included the complexity of measuring discipline-specific values, versus competencies, through the program's internship evaluation forms and the wide variety in nature and type of internships.
